If you’re someone who feels like talking about your expertise is bragging and you worry it’ll push people away or you'll come off as too cocky or whatever other narrative you have going on about it. Then this one is for you. Trust me, I get it. I struggle with this too.
I also see this sometimes when I am filming someone's brand story video. Some people get so uncomfortable if they start talking about how they help their clients. I want to change that narrative.
The RIGHT people aren’t turned off by you just talking about ways you can help and your knowledge about how you can share with clients to get them to where they need to be. They’re turned off when they can’t tell or are confused about what you actually do or how you can help them.
You sharing your expertise isn’t self-centered. It’s clarity for the people who are listening. Obviously, there is a time and a place for it, right. Like maybe if you're trying to network at a funeral, that's not the best time....
Think about the last time you were looking for help with something important. Did you want the person who hid their knowledge because they didn’t want to seem “too much”?
Or the person who confidently said:
“I can help you. Here’s how.”
One feels uncertain.
The other feels like the expert in their field.
I used to NEVER even post about on social media or much less type out a whole email or blog about ways I could help clients or talk about my knowledge on personal branding, and marketing. When I did start doing this, my business completely changed.
I'm not saying go around and be all braggy (because there CAN be cases like that) but I'm saying don't be afraid to make even a simple post about something you know a lot about or even saying “I am so proud of myself for where I'm at in my business."
So the next time that little voice whispers, “Don’t say that, it’s too self-promotional,” try reframing it.
You’re not bragging...you’re letting someone know “hey, I do this professionally (and I know what I'm talking about!)"
The more clearly you speak about what you do, the more clearly the right people will say yes.
